MATLAB Gun Violence Visualization App

In recent years there has been a spike of mass shootings in the United States. Many people believe it is a result of lenient gun control laws while others disagree. Our app was designed in response to the recent uproar in gun violence in the country. The purpose of our app is solely to inform the public of the correlation, or lack thereof, between mass shootings and gun control laws.

We utilized the information from two data sets to accomplish this. The data we found here showed over 260,000 incidents of gun violence in the country over the  past 5 years. We were able to extract the data, interpret the number of mass shootings, and plot each mass shooting on our map.

We used the gun laws for each individual state to show which states had which laws in which years. Our app makes it easier to visualize such data.

Our application is incredibly user friendly:

  1. User opens app to this empty map and control window

  2. User selects desired laws to view by state, selects year, and clicks “SHOW MAP”

  3. When user closes the app, a text file is produced that prints the elapsed time for each map generation.
